make____ is a new online creative magazine. Each month, a new theme is announced and submissions welcomed in any medium. The first theme (pictured) featured fiction, poems, photographs, a painting, clothing, and a pie!

make____ was created and is edited by Sarah Van Bonn, herself a contributor. I designed and coded the site, and will continue to redesign and develop make____ in subsequent editions. Expect to see thematic visual styles for each edition and new features and improvements in the coming months.

The site is constructed on (shoehorned into?) WordPress, with valid XHTML and CSS coded by hand. jQuery provides the Columnizer Plugin. Text replacement is performed with cufón. I hope to move make___ to drupal in the very near future.

This poster was designed for a presentation of land use research conducted on five city blocks in the Yorkville neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City. The poster was designed for print and measures 24 in. wide and 36 in. tall. Provided with a reference map, photographs and census statistics, I created an original map and graphs in Adobe Illustrator. Image manipulation and resizing was done in Adobe Photoshop. The new graphics and modified photographs were imported to Adobe InDesign, where the layout and type completed the project.

I designed this website as an online portfolio for Seattle-based fine artist Sam Birchman. The intensity of imagery, mood and color in Sam’s work demanded a reserved approach the site’s design, but rather than a strictly minimal slate, I opted for an expressive typography to complement the work. I believe the traditional aspect of layout and type style lend a sense of maturity and dignity to the work that a modern or contemporary style could not.

The site was coded by hand in W3C Valid XHTML and CSS. It is built on WordPress with the wonderful jQuery plugin, Galleria, for an image gallery, and an email contact form using perl. All typographic effects (drop caps, etc.) are achieved in CSS.

An Iraq War Protest Poster designed in 2007.

In October 2006, Les Roberts, PhD and Gilbert Burham, MD published a highly controversial report in the medical journal,The Lancet. Their estimate of total Iraqi deaths from both violent and non-violent causes directly and indirectly related to the US invasion was 654,965 people, by far the highest estimate on record. Though criticisms of the report were many, with claims of political motivation and poor scholarship, Robert, Gilbert and many of their academic peers have continued to defend the epidemiological rigor of their work.

Responding to accusations of political bias, Roberts wrote, “What does neutrality mean? Do people who publish about malaria deaths need to be neutral about malaria?”
